More Goat Kids!

By Terry Golson

I’m hard at work on another blogpost about horses and training, and it’s taking me awhile for me to craft my words. Lucky for you (and me!) I have more Baby Goat Photos! Susan had one more doe who kidded triplets! (I try to limit my use of exclamation points. But, really, baby goats!)

Mammals are complicated messes of design. Births can be harrowing. This one was no exception. The mama carried quadruplets. One was born stillborn and one of the others was small. Susan had a sleepless night and a few restless days, but by day four was ready for a training session with Hayden. I arrived early. Because. Baby Goats.

This pile of kids looked peaceful, but they were soon up and about.

There is nothing more joyful than baby goats sproinging on their pogo stick legs. I tried to get a video of the gamboling play but they were too fast and scattered for me. I tried for still photos. The best action shot was this one, which isn’t good at all.

Fortunately, this little one came over and asked for a cuddle. It didn’t last long, but it was enough time for Susan to take this photo.

We did find the willpower to leave the babies and give Hayden some attention. He was ready to do caveletti work under saddle. (See this post about doing the ground work.) Here he is, soft in the eye, relaxed through his body, yet energetic and building balance and muscles.

Goats and horses have a natural affinity for each other. The goats are Hayden’s companions. I don’t know what he thinks about the newest additions to his barn, but Hayden does seem to be in a good mood.
